Calcium waves in glia

Item Type:Book Section
Title:Calcium waves in glia
Creators Name:Haas, B. and Kettenmann, H.
Abstract:Astrocytes exhibit long-distance communication via propagation of Ca2+ signals from cell to cell. These Ca2+ waves can propagate either by release of ATP with subsequent activation of purinergic receptors on neighboring cells, or by diffusion of second messengers through gap junctions. Ca2+ is released from the endoplasmic reticulum by activation of inositol-3-phosphate receptors. Ca2+ waves are propagated during pathological events and can be modulated by receptor activation. Ca2+ waves in astrocytes lead to release of transmitters, and as a consequence, other cell types in the nervous system, including neurons and other glial, endothelial, and meningeal cells, can sense the wave.
