Abstract: | Sleep disorders are frequent in multiple sclerosis (MS) and contribute significantly to poor health-related quality of life. Several studies have shown an increased prevalence of restless legs syndrome (up to 19%) in patients with MS, especially in those with higher disability. One quarter of MS patients suffer from chronic insomnia. It is not known if brain tissue damage due to MS (focal lesions, diffuse damage to the normal appearing white matter, brain atrophy) could lead to sleep apnea. Narcolepsy is a rare condition in MS. However, bilateral hypothalamic lesions can cause a secondary narcolepsy with a hypocretin deficit, and secondary forms of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder due to brainstem lesions have occasionally been reported. More than 80% of MS patients suffer from fatigue, which may be caused or aggravated by sleep disorders. Diagnosis of an underlying sleep disorder in MS fatigue is paramount as fatigue severity may be significantly reduced by successful treatment of a related sleep medical condition. |
